Michael Bracco's first Original Graphic Novel, BIRTH, comes to the iPhone/iPod touch

Michael Bracco's first Original Graphic Novel, BIRTH, comes to the iPhone/iPod touch

Issues #1, 2, and 3 of Michael Bracco's BIRTH are now available on the Apple iTunes marketplace as BIRTH: AQUAN & TERAN WAR #1-3 (0f 3)! Published by Robot Comics and bundled with the new iRobot Comics Viewer, BIRTH chronicles a story far more unusual and surprising than mobile users are accustomed to! Issue #1 is offered for free download. Issue #2 is available for the price of $0.99. Issue #3, which will conclude the GN, is to be released shortly.

"The ultimate cautionary anti-war fable, blending fantasy and sci-fi elements into something wholly its own. Bracco's art is jaw-dropping eye-candy, and the story is a fantastic mesh of text and visuals. This is a tale made to be a comic - it'd be extraordinarily expensive as a film, and perhaps overly didactic as pure text, but as the graphic novel BIRTH, it's pitch-perfect. It's got style, atmosphere and ambiance to spare. And it's very intelligent and imaginatively executed. A book worth your time and money, no doubt whatsoever. " --Broken Frontier

"Birth is a swift, smooth read." - Tom Slaski, GeeksOfDoom.com

Created, Written, and Illustrated by Michael S. Bracco, originally published by Alterna Comics, Birth: Aquan & Teran War is adapted by Robot Comics to create a version specifically formatted for mobile devices. The mobile adaptation of is also available for Android mobiles through the Android Market.

Synopsis
Two doomed alien species, the Aquans and Terans, are at the brink of extinction. Their only solace is in placing blame on each other for their own evolutionary shortcomings. Blame quickly turns to hatred which escalates to a devastating war, decimating the two great cultures. Now all but dead, their only chance is to find peace and hope where only resentment has ever existed, in each other. Michael Bracco (Novo, Adam Wreck, Jesus Hates Zombies) writes and draws a fantastic epic of a planet where death is necessary for Birth.

Small Press Expo Announces the Ignatz Award Nominees for SPX 2009

The Small Press Expo (SPX), the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels and alternative political cartoons, is pleased to announce nominees for the thirteenth annual presentation of the Ignatz Awards, a celebration of outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning.

The Ignatz, named after George Herriman's brick-wielding mouse, recognizes exceptional work that challenges popular notions of what comics can achieve, both as an art form and as a means of personal expression. The Ignatz Awards are a festival prize, the first of such in the United States comic book industry.

The nominees for the ballot were determined by a panel of five of the best of today’s comic artists, Lilli Carre, Vanessa Davis, Robert Kirby, Scott Mills and Laura Park with the votes cast for the awards by the attendees during SPX. The Ignatz Awards will be presented at the gala Ignatz Awards ceremony held on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 9:00 PM.

SPX will be held Saturday, September 26 from 11AM to 7PM and Sunday, September 27, noon-6PM at The North Bethesda Marriott Convention Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Admission is $8 for a single day and $15 for both days.

'The Devil's Handshake' Premieres in October

'The Devil's Handshake' Premieres in October

Adding another high-quality project to its impressive roster of creator-owned titles, Archaia announced it will publish The Devil’s Handshake, an action-packed adventure story by the same creative team behind the popular Spooks comic franchise: creator and co-writer Ryan Schifrin, co-writer and G.I. Joe godfather Larry Hama, and artist Adam Archer.

The Devil’s Handshake is the story of two adventurous British jewel thieves named Alaric Moebius and Basil Fox, who have been tricked into stealing artifacts from around the world by a man who might just be the Devil himself! On an adventure that takes them from the volcanoes of New Guinea to the wastelands of the Saharan desert, Moebius and Fox encounter flesh-eating cannibals, an all-virgin squad of female commandos, and the murderous undead Ghoul Brothers, who never seem to be far behind our heroes!

“With Devil’s Handshake I wanted to create two new pulp heroes for the 21st century, while at the same time paying homage to some of the adventure stories I grew up with,” said Schifrin. “Larry is a master at what he does, and the stunning art of Adam Archer and Lizzy John speaks for itself. The fine folks of Archaia have been amazing to work with and supportive of the book from day one, and I can’t wait to see readers’ reactions to what we’ve put together!”

Famed moviemaker Guillermo Del Toro raved The Devil’s Handshake is “a delightful romp mixing pulpish delight with bold, eye-catching graphics and instantly likable characters. It’s old-school fun for the 21st century.”

Joining Schifrin is his collaborator from Spooks, the legendary Larry Hama. Hama is best known as the architect behind Marvel Comics’ G.I. Joe franchise, and has also worked on such titles as Wolverine, Iron Fist and Elektra. Artist Adam Archer, who also worked on Spooks with Schifrin, has previously worked on Supergirl, Friday the 13th and the Heroes graphic novels, based on the hit television show.

“We’re very, very happy to welcome Ryan, Larry and Adam to the Archaia family,” said Stephen Christy, Archaia’s Director of Development. “One of the things I’ve missed in comics lately is the double-sized one-shot, a book where you can get drawn into an adventure that begins and ends in 48 pages. No one does old-school adventure better than Larry Hama, and I don’t think any of his fans are going to be disappointed by this book.”

The Devil’s Handshake is a 48-page, perfect-bound graphic novella priced at $5.95 and will ship in October. It is available for order now at your local comics retailer or through select book outlets.

Fallen Justice #2 Super Hero Comic, How it got a PG-13 rating by Apple iTunes

Fallen Justice #2 Super Hero Comic, How it got a PG-13 rating by Apple iTunes

We had a great release for our Fallen Justice #1 super hero comic on the iPhone last month, it is now in the top 25 of all
iPhone comics. Since then we have release Fallen Justice #2 and have included a complete copy of it in the attached PDF.

An interesting hiccup happened during our review by Apple. While we were at Comic-Con, we were hearing about Stan Lee's
comic "Stripperella" being released on the iPhone and thinking we were way above that sort of trash. Then Apple let us know
that panels 86 and 88 were too racy and they bumped up our rating up. We are wondering if this PG-13 rating is the cause
of more people downloading Fallen Justice #2 than Fallen Justice #1.

You have permission to use these two panels on you Web site and other Fallen Justice images from Graphics Lab 2 if you need it.
Here are a few other items you may need:

Both books have had a tremendous start largely due to the reviews we have gotten from bloggers (see list at

Radical launches the Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency this October

Radical launches the Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency this October

Radical Publishing is proud and excited to announce the October 2009 debut of its newest miniseries FVZA: Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency written by popular comic writer David Hine (Civil War: X-Men, Spider-Man Noir).

"Hine has the unique ability to take familiar horrors and turn them into new terrors. FVZA is David Hine at his best. Prepare for a bloody fun ride." Steve Niles

Based off of the popular website, FVZA.org, created by Richard S. Dargan, FVZA chronicles a world where a deadly disease, representing a new threat of global terrorism, transforms innocent victims into Zombies and a long dormant government task force is called into action: The Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency. Throughout history, from the Civil War to World War II, the FVZA protected humanity from the blood-sucking and flesh-eating hordes -- until a cure was discovered that sent the undead to their graves. When a new incurable strain of the virus ravages a small town in America, Agent Landra Pecos must call upon her lethal skills to eradicate the threat. But as Landra delves deeper into her investigation of the undead menace, she uncovers shocking secrets that will forever change her family, her world and her life.

“FVZA is a cutting edge reinterpretation of American history and Radical is excited to bring it to life,” said Radical Publishing President and Publisher Barry Levine. “David Hine is just a phenomenal writer who is taking a fresh mythology to new heights. Longtime fans of the website as well as new readers won’t be disappointed with David’s amazing take on the FVZA.”

The three-issue miniseries will be the next title in Radical Publishing’s new 64-page, bookshelf format, with a low $4.99 price point. Also featured in issue #1 is a special preview of The Last Days of American Crime by Rick Remender (Punisher, Fear Agent) Radical’s next bookshelf title, on sale December 2009.

Desperado Delivers Deadworld

Desperado Publishing is giving the latest Deadworld story the treatment by releasing it in hardcover format as well as providing an online video promotion. Deadworld: Slaughterhouse is an original story from writer Gary Reed and illustrated by Sami Makkonen. Makkonen is also the artist of the new Hatter M book being released that ties in with the NY Times best-seller, The Looking Glass Wars.

Coming in October, Deadworld: Slaughterhouse was originally intended as a four issue mini-series and the first issue was released. However, do the increased viability of books in today’s market, Desperado decided to forego the remaining issues and put the story out complete in a single book. The complete first issue is available for free at Myebooks. In addition to providing the free first issue, Desperado has put together a promotional video of the saga that can be found here.

“Deadworld has some really hard core fans,” said Publisher Joe Pruett, “and I’ve wanted to do a hardcover of a Deadworld story for awhile and so here we are. It’s a really good story by Gary and Sami’s artwork is just fantastic. This deserves to be in hardcover format.”

Writer Gary Reed said he was also very pleased with Sami’s art. “It was just the style I was looking for to do a story arc. And I like the idea of doing original graphic novels which this essentially is. The next one is already underway and that is called “The Last Siesta” and is being illustrated by Mark Bloodworth who has worked on Deadworld in the past and was the artist on Clive Barker’s Hellraiser put out by Marvel.” Also on the schedule is a collection of all the material produced by the original Deadworld artist, Vince Locke, including his promotional pieces and the very first Deadworld story that has never seen print.

Reed said that activity on Deadworld is heavy. “The action figures are due out very soon as is the Halloween mask. The t-shirts, licensed out to Rotten Cotton, are back in high production, the CD package from Eagle One Media will have a special insert put in, but unfortunately, the role-playing game from Seraphim Guard has been delayed until mid to late 2010.”

Desperado and Reed will be appearing at a number of conventions over the next few months and Reed has been booked on panels to discuss Deadworld. “I’m always surprised at the enthusiasm fans have for Deadworld so I’ll be discussing that as well as what’s going on with the film.” Reed said that he will be giving away free copies of Deadworld at every panel discussion he participates in as a “thank you for having to listen to me.”

As for the film being produced by Coraline producer Bill Mechanic (who also did Fightclub, Braveheart, and Titanic) and written by Watchmen and X-Men scripter, David Hayter, is moving along according to Reed. “It’s moving at Hollywood speed but at this stage, there’s a lot of different areas that have to be addressed. But I’m happy with things so far.”

Deadworld: Slaughterhouse is currently available in the Diamond Previews under Desperado Publishing.

COB's Kevin Powers Looks at Champions Online

I'm not a hardcore or die-hard video gamer. Don't get me wrong, I love video games and I play them every night, late at night to wind down before bed. But I'm not like the 15 year old kid outside the midnight release of Halo 3 that gave the people in line a passionate speech about finishing off the aliens. I went for the experience, but that was the first and last midnight release I'll probably ever do. But I do love video games and hope to be involved in the development of a few at some point in my life.

A few years back at the dawn of the current superhero craze, there was a game called Freedom Force for the PC. A top-down RPG that had a campy story reminiscent of Silver Age comics and a great character editor. This editor was so great that you could create any superhero. The Avengers, the JLA, your own. It was great an arguably a precursor to Marvel Ultimate Alliance. But shortly after Freedom Force came the MMO City of Heroes.

City of Heroes was an all action RPG in which you created you character and immersed yourself in a completely different world, as is the case with all MMOs. City of Heroes let you create a superhero, a superhero that could do anything... BUT it cost $14.99 a month. I didn't play it when it came out and I didn't play it through college, but shortly after college I got a hold of it and played it on and off for about 2 years. While I think it takes too damn long to level up in these games to acquire certain powers you really want, like flight. I mean, these games should allow faster leveling for additional character creation to keep things fresh.

Anyways, one thing about City of Heroes that I absolutely loved was the amount of character customization. In actuality, City Of Heroes became my go to place for character concepts and creations. I'm kind of hoping Champions does the same.

Now, I preordered Champions to get into the beta, I won't lie. I wanted to test out the game, and see what it is like. It is also a massively creative playground for me, as I have already designed 2 characters for an upcoming line of comics and created my "flagship" character in the Champions Universe. I can't stress the value of the character creation tool for me personally and creatively. I love what can be done.

Now let's also acknowledge the fact that this game "Champions Online" is basically "City of Heroes 2." Developed by Cryptic Studios, the same publisher as COH, Champions has many of the same customization options but everything has been upgraded. This game was originally supposed to be "Marvel Universe Online" but became "Champions."

Apparently, there will also be the very 2009 option of purchasing in game content, but that is on top of the apparent $14.99 a month that you will pay for monthly access. While I intend to play this game and I really do like what I have seen so far in the beta and can't wait to see it in the fully realized full release version, $14.99 is kind of steep. Especially when extra content is available. I think that these MMOs need to adapt the Second Life strategy. Free game, but in order to acquire certain things you have to buy them. Not powers and such, that should come through leveling up, but costumes, accessories and hideouts among other things. But the $14.99 will keep me once again from playing this type of game consistently, month to month. There is an option to purchase a lifetime subscription for $200, and its tempting but I think I'd have to pass.

Regardless, I'll probably play Champions. I'll enjoy it and I will more than likely continue to use it to help myself develop characters.

Clive Barker Introduces New Dimension of Horror to Comic Books

Acclaimed novelist/filmmaker/painter Clive Barker is teaming up with IDW to make his return to comic books in October with Clive Barker’s Seduth. This especially horrific comic is presented with vivid 3-D effects, as Barker is joined by the Eisner-nominated art team of Gabriel Rodriguez and Jay Fotos (Locke & Key), along with co-writer Chris Monfette and 3-D art expert Ray Zone.

In Seduth, Barker tells the tale of celebrated architect Harold Engle, who first glimpses the small cloud of darkness inside a glittering, priceless diamond, without any knowledge of the terrible plague contained within. Seduth follows Engle on a surreal journey through murder and madness to the very heart of existence and a terrible, impossible choice—to unravel the very fabric of the world, or to save it?

Seduth marks Barker’s long-awaited return to comics and is the first all-new comic book created by Barker in two decades. IDW has previously presented adaptations of Barker’s novels The Thief of Always and The Great and Secret Show.

“In working with Clive Barker over the past five years and in adapting one of his books myself, the thing that constantly struck me is how wildly inventive he is, and I’ve always been eager for him to create something new” said IDW Publisher/Editor-in-Chief, Chris Ryall. “With Seduth, where 3-D artwork is essential to the story and presents a complete merging of story and art in a unique way, we finally have that.”

The visual collaborators on Seduth are Rodriguez, who not only reached new heights with his work on The Great and Secret Show adaptation, and Zone, who has pioneered 3-D effects in print. Seduth takes as one of its influences the collaged journals of Peter Beard, leading to a style never-before-seen in comics. Seduth comes complete with 3-D glasses, as well as back-up material that includes Barker’s original notes and sketches for the story.

“I have always felt that comics as a medium are still in a relatively early stage in their development—there are so many roads still to be taken,” said Barker. “It is a medium which can afford to take risks, and we’re taking them.” Barker then added “This is, in more than one sense, a dream project. It is my first chance to co-produce with my best friend Robb Humphreys on a story that really touches our shared interests in the power of hallucinations and visions. It also brought me together with Chris Monfette, who will certainly be a part of my creative life for many years to come if I have any say in the matter. Add the art of Gabriel, the color of Jay and the amazingly mind-blowing talents of Ray Zone, this fulfills my dream of Seduth completely.”

About collaborating with Barker, the project’s co-writer, Monfette said “Clive came to me, quite literally, with nothing… which is to say that he wanted to create a piece about the essence of nihilism. Foolishly, I had expected a story—manageable, straightforward, perhaps a bit messy—and what I received was a five-dimensional jigsaw, the likes of which could only ever come from the mind of Clive Barker, my friend, whose head and heart, I believe, are one and the same.”

Clive Barker’s Seduth, a 32-page ad-free comic with 3-D glasses, will be in stores in October. Diamond order code AUG09 0924.

Roger Corman's Black Scorpian to Prowl the Pages of Comics

Angel City is once again safe from the vermin which infest its streets as Roger Corman’s femme fatale hero Black Scorpion returns to comic book pages this November through Bluewater Productions.

Roger Corman Presents: Black Scorpion is the first title to emerge from the partnership deal announced in August between the legendary genre filmmaker and the independent comic book publisher.

“Comic books have given me so much over the years that it’s time I gave something back to the medium,” said Corman.

This new version of the Black Scorpion, which previously found success as two made-for-cable movies on Showtime and a 22 one hour episodes on the SciFi Channel, will reintroduce and reimagine the original character developed by Corman and producer Craig Nevius.

Nevius added “Roger and I had always intended to create a comic book franchise based on the ‘Black Scorpion’ movies and TV series. And with classic costumed superheroes back in vogue thanks to the success of the ‘Batman’ and ‘Iron Man’ movies, the time seemed right to bring back our costumed super heroine.”

Written by long-time genre veteran Paul Salamoff (Batman & Robin, Ed Wood, The Addams Family, Scary Movie 2, Alien Siege), the new comic version of the character will build on the original mythology of a police detective, consumed by revenge over the murder of her father, decides to don a mask and strike at criminals who deem themselves above the law.

Daniel Cuchacovich provides the art for the monthly title which includes the likeness of Michelle Lintel who played the title character in the television series.

Following this title, several other Corman properties will soon find their way into graphic form." Some of the titles currently under development include "Death Stalker," "The Barbarian Queen," and "Humanoids from the Deep"

As Bluewater now is working with both Corman and the Vincent Price estate, it is certain that several of the horror classics based on the Edgar Allen Poe stories will also be produced in comic form in the near future.

"Roger Corman's body of work is so visual and visceral," said Bluewater's president Darren Davis. "What will make these titles stand out is Mr. Corman’s personal involvement in their development," Davis said. “This is not a licensing gimmick, but an outlet to rediscover his creative genius and a chance for readers to once again be pleasantly frightened. I still get the willies from the 'Masque of the Red Death'."

The suggested retail price (SRP) for each upcoming issue is $3.99.

President Obama and Captain Action Fight for Justice

President Obama and Captain Action Fight for Justice

Captain Action #5 features President Obama and Captain Action as they battle a space alien death panel and the insidious Red Crawl. This issue will be on sale August 26th and is supported by retailer events in select cities nationwide.

This issue, as planned prior to President Obama’s election, was meant to offer readers a comic showcasing our President in a leading action-oriented role.

“Since then, practically every comic publisher has featured President Obama,” said Ed Catto of Captain Action Enterprises. “As a result, we repositioned our story, and it now serves as a kind of tongue-in-cheek commentary on all the other comics featuring the President. We might be the first comic to feature Vice President Joe Biden and certainly are the first to feature the VP’s Deputy National Security Advisor, Brian McKeon.”

“We’re proud of the cover by Mark Sparacio showing Captain Action as he morphs into the guise of President Obama,” said Joe Ahearn of Captain Action Enterprises. “For the non-political crowd, we offer an alternate cover by comics legend Paul Gulacy that is also a beauty.”

“I’m more interested in telling good stories than in politics,” said Moonstone Publisher Joe Gentile. “but Obama is from Chicago, and we love to support our ‘hometown’ guy.” Moonstone (www.MoonstoneBooks.com) publishes a wide variety of comics featuring characters such as the Phantom, Zorro, The Green Hornet and Kolchak: The Night Stalker from their Chicago-based offices.

In addition to the main story with President Obama, Captain Action #5 includes back-up stories featuring Action Boy, Captain Action’s sidekick, and an untold Captain Action thriller that takes place in Cuba 1962.

“From the eye-catching and button-pushing title, to the story by Jeff McComsey and James Cooper, the art by McComsey, and the right-out-of-the-gate speeding bullet pace, Alterna Comics may just have the best comic on their hands that they’ve published to date.” –Geeks of Doom

“This is a great book, and I think Alterna Comics could have a great success on their hands. American Terror could be considered a junior V for Vendetta–following in that book’s fight-for-revolution footsteps. Search this volume out and look for future volumes. You’ll want to read them.” –Karyn Pinter, Comics Bulletin

“The conventions of a political tale are presented smartly. American Terror is old-school yet relevant and modern. The artwork reminds me of how Comic Books really can be art. This book isn’t written to be an event-filled franchise, it is a well-written, beautifully weaved tale.” –Project Fanboy

Created by Jeff McConsey and James Comsey, originally published by Alterna Comics, American Terror is adapted by Robot Comics to create a version specifically formatted for mobile devices. The mobile adaptation of is also available for Android mobiles through the Android Market.

Image's Chew Sells Out... Again!

Since CHEW’s release, John Layman and Rob Guillory’s ongoing crime series with a disgustingly delicious twist has faced a series of distribution-level sellouts despite extremely healthy reprints. Next month, Issues One, Two and Three will each be reprinted in time for Issue Four's release, with Issue One reprinted for a fourth (and final!) printing, a ‘Last Bite’ edition for people who are still hungry for a copy of one of the most talked about debuts of the summer.

“I continued to be stunned and staggered by response to this book, and I don't understand it one bit.,” Layman said. “CHEW is about a cannibal cop, set post bird flu alternative reality. Nobody should want to read it, and, yet, it continues to sell out. I’m told we’re now three times as successful as THE WALKING DEAD’s initial launch and, even better, the fans and retailers I’ve heard from are excited for more. So I'm not even going to try to understand it, I'm just going to be grateful to all the readers and retailers and reviewers who have responded so, so, so positively. Thanks!"

CHEW's star, Detective Tony Chu, is a cop with a secret. As a Cibopath, Detective Chu gets a psychic impression from whatever he eats. While it means he's a hell of a Detective if he can stomach the evidence, once his secret gets out the government makes plans for him, whether he likes it or not. CHEW blends horror, mystery and the strangest ability of them all in an ongoing series of horrific crimes solved in the most horrific way possible. With the sell outs continuing on a regular basis, Image will be once again increasing each printing’s quantities in hopes of keeping them available. The fourth printing of issue one will mark the final time the comic will be reprinted in a special ‘Last Bite’ edition.
CHEW #1-4, all 32-page full color comic books for $2.99, will be available in-stores on September 2nd, 2009.

CARNIVAL COMICS Ain't Clowning Around... #1 eBook On Blackberry And Over 50,000 Down!

CARNIVAL COMICS Ain't Clowning Around... #1 eBook On Blackberry And Over 50,000 Down!

Carnival Comics ain't clowning around when it comes to racking up the download numbers and reaching around the globe to 144 Countries with their titles. On the Nokia smartphone, the Atomic Dreams app has gone over 25,000 downloads in just two weeks. If that were not enough, Carnival Of Souls which has been downloaded over 26,000 times, is the #1 eBook on Blackberry's App World and 6 of the top 10 eBooks are Carnival Comics titles! (Find us in the Reference and ebook category.)

Sharon L. Barnes comments, "Having been a part of this industry for several years now, we have strived to stay on top of this technology and reach the largest number of people possible. In other words we like a packed house when we take center stage. When publishing books as an independent company, if you reach 5 to 10,000 people, it's considered a major success. With just two digital app chapters, we have reached over 50,000 people in 144 countries. And we're reaching thousands more everyday. If all of our apps were totaled, the numbers would be astounding."

Jazan Wild, writer of both app titles comments, "I will always love the printed word and I can't wait to see these titles collected into Graphic Novels. But while some in this industry are reluctant to acknowledge the potential for this amazing new technology, and even us as a company for that matter, the fact is that no matter what format a good story is told in, it's a good story. I could not be more thrilled to think my books have reached across so many borders. While it's fantastic to do a book signing at Golden Apple on Melrose and see the books on the shelves, it's just as mind boggling to me to think somebody in Russia, China or Africa is reading a story I wrote on a smartphone. We would have never been able to achieve this in the written book alone. So again, while others are reluctant or refuse to acknowledge these numbers and amazing achievements, get used to it. The show will go on. We're not going anywhere."

If you haven't checked out the apps yet, what are you waiting for? There are several free chapters to try on iPhone, Android, Blackberry and (1) Nokia. See what all of the buzz is about and become a fan of the Carnival!

Ian Sharman and Orang Utan Comics have put a lot of heart and soul into this project, and it all pays of in the form of this great collection of stories. Kong is back and in company with world-destroying Sea Monsters! Posted: Wednesday, August 12, 2009

AAM/Markosia's long awaited Kong: King of Skull Island trade paperback will ship in October 2009, on the back of news that the story (described as the sequel & prequel of the much-loved classic), is to be made into a movie. The announcement was made at the Ray Bradbury panel at San Diego's Comicon amidst much excitement and enthusiasm that the great simian is making a comeback.

Also shipping in the same month is Serpent Wars, written by Christoff Rodriguez and Chris Campanozzi, and features art by Antonio Rojo. Set in the 1800's, a young scientist's apprentice stows away onto the war ship of a British Lord, in order to prove that there are sea creatures downing ships off the shores of South America. His voyage leads to the discovery of a mysterious hidden island where an ancient race is witness to the epic serpent gods who are now locked in a battle that could decide the fate of mankind.

"We are very excited about these two books", said publisher Harry Markos, "discussions about the Kong: King of Skull Island movie have been going on for some time now and it was amazing to hear the announcement at the Ray Bradbury panel at Comicon. We have spent the last six months or so working on some significant improvements to art and colors and it looks great". On Serpent Wars, Markos adds, "Serpent Wars is an absolute must-read. The story is based closely around South American myths and legends so you'll see some fantastic characters. Monsters, magic and mayhem all round! We're also delighted that industry legend Howard Chaykin will be writing an introduction, which speaks volumes for the project".

The Diamond order codes for both books are:

Robot Comics and ETERNAL CITY featured on CNN.com - "The Future of Pulp"

Robot Comics and The Eternal City are featured in a roundup of the mobile comics industry by CNN's Cherise Fong. An excerpt:

Are comics made to be read on cell phones, Kindles and iPods the new pulp of pop culture?

While mobile manga has become increasingly popular and lucrative in Japan, in recent months start-ups have been mushrooming around the world to bring comics and graphic novels to both loyal fans and new audiences -- all in the palm of your hand.

"I wanted to break all the barriers between comics and their potential readers," said Hermes Pique, director of Robot Comics, a company that produces and publishes comics for mobile devices.

"In a world where 60.6 percent of the population has a mobile, and where mobiles have evolved from phones to all-purpose gadgets, mobile comics seemed the best way to start."

Apple's App Store, a hotbed for mobile innovation, has seen an increase in applications dedicated to reading comics, many of which are also available for other mobile platforms.

MOUSE GUARD WINTER Is a New York Times Best Seller

Archaia is proud to announce that Archaia’s own Mouse Guard Vol. 2: Winter 1152 by David Petersen has debuted at #4 on The New York Times Hardcover Graphic Books Best Seller List, week ending August 1.

The rankings on the list, according to The New York Times, “reflect sales of graphic novels, for the week ending August 1, at many thousands of venues where a wide range of books are sold nationwide. These include hundreds of independent book retailers (statistically weighted to represent all such outlets); national, regional and local chains; online and multimedia entertainment retailers; university, gift, supermarket, discount department stores and newsstands. In addition, these rankings also include unit sales reported by retailers nationwide that specialize in graphic novels and comic books.”

“I am amazed and honored that Mouse Guard Vol. 2: Winter 1152 even made a list like The New York Times Best Sellers,” said Petersen. “I’m already proud of the work I did on this book, so to see the fans are eager to read it only makes the whole experience more fulfilling and I thank them for that!”

“To keep this one short and sweet, Mouse Guard exemplifies all things Archaia strives to be with every single title,” said PJ Bickett, president of Archaia. “David deserves every accolade and praise and he has paved the way for what a successful Creator title should represent.”

Also available from Archaia are previous Mouse Guard titles Mouse Guard Vol. 1: Fall 1152 and the Mouse Guard Roleplaying Game. For a complete list of Archaia’s Graphic Novel Backlist, see pg. 199 in the August 2009 issue of Previews catalog.

NYLON ROAD, A New Type of Graphic Novel

This fall, a new graphic novel will hit bookstores around the nation, but this is no normal graphic novel… NYLON ROAD doesn’t deal with the action adventure tales of superheroes and fantasy urban landscapes, but instead is jam-packed with the captivating drama and heart-pounding action of real life—of a young girl’s coming of age in the very real Tehran, Iran of the 1970’s.

NYLON ROAD tells the story of its author, Parsua Bashi, as she recounts her emotionally and physically grueling move from Iran to Switzerland and her struggle to balance the excitement of a new life in the West with the agony of what was left behind. As she reflects on her adolescence, Bashi paints a revealing picture of what it's like to be a young woman growing up under Shiite Law - struggles with her parents, problems in school, and the whipping punishments she received from armed men for speaking her mind. Barely of age, Parsua was forced into marriage and had a child—but the marriage wasn’t the fairy tale she imagined, and she was forced to flee the country. Now all she can think about is what she left behind - the child she was forced to leave, the child who under Shiite Law she is not allowed to contact.

IDW to Reprint The Hunter

After just two weeks on the market, Darwyn Cooke’s exceedingly popular graphic adaptation The Hunter has sold out from the distributor. IDW is pleased to announce that the second printing will be in stores in September, and encourages fans to check with their local retailers now for availability of any remaining copies from the first printing.

With two consecutive weeks on The New York Times best seller list, The Hunter has earned high praise for Cooke’s compelling interpretation of Parker and has been critically lauded nation-wide by The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and Entertainment Weekly.

“This is a truly amazing book and one that IDW is very proud of,” said Special Projects Editor, Scott Dunbier. “Even though we aggressively overprinted the initial run, the book’s popularity is exceeding even our high hopes and we are thrilled to be on our second printing already. We encourage stores to place their reorders quickly to meet the continued demand for this great book.”

Darwyn Cooke, the Eisner-Award-winning writer and artist of such classics as DC: The New Frontier, Selina’s Big Score, and The Spirit, brings to life one of the true classics of crime fiction: Richard Stark’s Parker. Stark was a pseudonym used by the revered and multi-award-winning author, Donald Westlake.

“I'm thrilled with the response The Hunter has been getting,” said Cooke. “The critics and fans have been extremely kind. That, along with the lightning speed in which it sold out, makes me one happy guy.”

The Hunter, the first book in the Parker series, is the story of a man who hits New York head-on like a shotgun blast to the chest. Betrayed by the woman he loved and double-crossed by his partner in crime, Parker makes his way cross-country with only the thought of revenge burning in his mind.

“To anyone who hasn’t yet picked up a copy, call your local store—they might still have some copies, and if not, they can order one for you!” added Dunbier.

Darwyn Cooke’s The Hunter is now available in stores.

The World of Weird Fishes Comes to SLG Publishing

The World of Weird Fishes Comes to SLG Publishing

Weird Fishes, an online comic series created by Jamaica Dyer, will see print as a graphic novel from SLG Publishing this fall. A surreal and odd coming of age story, Weird Fishes tells the story of Bunny Boy and Dee, two kids who're hitting an age where you can't quite get away with being insane and quirky the way you can when you're little. Dee plays with imaginary talking animal friends and has no intention of stopping, but Bunny Boy hits that wall of realizing he wants to be cool and can't hang out with losers. "The story was meant to entertain myself and my friends, and I think it's safe to say indie kids are a good part of the audience" creator Jamaica Dyer said about her graphic novel "It should be relatable to anyone who's dealt with growing up and losing friends and having an overactive imagination."

Dyer began Weird Fishes to show that she could do comics as fine art, putting color pages online without too much concern for what might happen should the material ever see print. After one of the pages was included in a Society of Illustrators student art show Dyer collected the first 30 pages together as a black and white mini-comic. "I quickly realized that it feels very cohesive as a black and white book." added Dyer "Obviously it's a shame to not be able to print it in color, but I like the idea of the graphic novel being it's own entity, it's the pocket version that you can read on the bus or give to your friends."

Dyer's unique vision and style were best summed up by writer Warren Ellis who said "The only explanation for Jamaica Dyer is that she was built by aliens and dropped here to show us all how crap we are compared to her." SLG President Dan Vado called Dyer "One of the few people who I have seen to successfully marry comics with a fine art sensibility."

The print version of Weird Fishes will be a 120 page black and white graphic novel priced at $9.95 isbn #978-1-59362-177-3. Scheduled to be released in October 2009, Weird Fishes will be available at better comic book stores and online on Amazon.com as well as SLG Publishing's own website at www.slgcomic.com. A preview and trailer for the book can also be seen on the company's website in the Previews and Coming Attractions section

SLG Publishing is a San Jose, CA based publisher of comic books, graphic novels and related merchandise. Established in 1986 some of SLG's more notable comics and creators have included Johnny the Homicidal Maniac by Jhonen Vasquez, The Haunted Mansion based on the Disney attraction of the same name, Milk & Cheese by Evan Dorkin and Zombies Calling by Faith Erin Hicks.
